The Essay:
A trip to the moon is a french film recorded in 1902. It is a silent black and white film that lasts between 13-16 minutes. It was directed by Georges Melies who was also the main character of the story.
The film starts with a group of astronomers which after arguing decide to go to the moon by being shot in a capsule from a giant cannon. Once they arrive to the moon, after a snowstorm they go inside a cave and they find and kill a selenite. After that they are taken by the selenites and after killing the selenite king they return to the Earth with a selenite. They organise a parade for them and they are made a statue.
Technically, it was recorded with a static camera and it uses scenarios for the foreground and background. At its time the special effects were really good and Melies uses the stop trick (which he had created) which consist in stop the recording for a while and then turning on to create a special effect.
